Sunday – 6.17.12

The night that Jesus was betrayed, he was with his disciples celebrating the passover.

They obviously didn’t know the extent to which they would be separated from Jesus in the coming days. But Jesus knew. And he spent some time telling them how to stay connected to him; how they continue to learn from him; continue to experience his presence in their lives and continue to grow in him.

In John 15, Jesus uses a metaphor of a grapevine. He says that he is like a grapevine; God, his father, is the vinedresser and we are branches. It’s only the life of the vine IN the branches that produces life in the branches and grows fruit in the branches; apart from the vine, the branch can do nothing. In the same way, its only the life of Jesus in us that produces life in us, allows us to grow and produces fruit in our lives. And like branches, apart from him we can do nothing. So the call of Jesus is to abide in him, remain in him and stay connected to him. He will produce the fruit.
